Medical Air Mattress

A medical air mattress , also known as an alternating pressure mattress or

an air pressure mattress, is a specialized type of mattress designed to

provide  pressure relief and prevent pressure ulcers (bedsores) in

individuals who are bedridden or have limited mobility. These mattresses

are commonly used in healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes,

and home care environments.

The main purpose of a medical air mattress is to distribute the pressure

exerted on the body’s contact points with the mattress. Prolonged pressure

on these points, especially bony prominences like hips, shoulders, and heels,

can lead to reduced blood flow and tissue damage, ultimately causing

pressure ulcers. An air mattress helps mitigate this risk by using a system

of alternating air cells that inflate and deflate in a cyclic pattern.

This cyclic movement redistributes the pressure across different areas of

the body, reducing the risk of localized pressure buildup.
